Lex's Story

Having started his brewing career in 1977 with South African Breweries, Lex worked his way through the ranks, gaining a wealth of knowledge, culminating in him earning the title of Master Brewer. But his desire to craft artisanal beer could not be fulfilled in commercial mass brewing, and in 1983 he made the decision to pursue his dream of creating his own brews. Having been issued the first Microbrewery License in over 20 decades, Lex founded the now legendary Mitchell’s Brewery.

After 19 successful years, Lex sold the Knysna brewery and took a sabbatical from his craft, however in 2011 he could no longer deny his yearning to brew once more. Having forged a new partnership, he established a microbrewery and gastro pub on the banks of the Baakens River, Port Elizabeth. It is here at Bridge Street Brewery that his passion for brewing all-natural craft beer was rekindled and where he now once again applies his trade as he imparts his knowledge of fusion mashing with others.

The Master Brewers

Lex

Under the watchful eye of Lex Mitchell, Bridge Street Brewery’s four beers and two ciders are crafted in the true traditional artisan way. As the pioneer of micro brewing in South Africa, Lex followed his dream of creating his own craft beer after leaving Ohlssens Brewery as Amstel Master Brewer in 1981, resulting in the establishment of legendary Mitchell’s Brewery. Returning to his craft and the basic brewing principles, Lex now shares his knowledge as Master Brewer with his apprentices at Bridge Street Brewery.

Simphiwe

Originally working as a runner, Simphiwe showed an interest in craft beer and moved up the ranks to his current position as assistant brewer, training under the guidance of Lex Mitchell, rating the Celtic Cross Pilsener as his favourite BSB brew. “I love walking into work every day and seeing the fermenting process, checking the pressure in the tanks and being part of the step-by-step process. I wake up every day excited and passionate about my job. Being a brewer is more than just a job for me, it’s a way of life.”

Quentin

Rating the Boars Head Bitter as his favourite BSB brew, Quentin’s love for craft beer grew from a love for beer in general. As brewery manager he finds reward in being part of the process of brewing a quality craft beer and learning from the wealth of knowledge that is Lex Mitchell. “The process of starting with a range of different raw ingredients and creating a product that is loved by so many is what brewing means to me.”
