Lex's Story
Having started his brewing career in 1977 with South African Breweries, Lex worked his way through the ranks, gaining a wealth of knowledge, culminating in him earning the title of Master Brewer. But his desire to craft artisanal beer could not be fulfilled in commercial mass brewing, and in 1983 he made the decision to pursue his dream of creating his own brews. Having been issued the first Microbrewery License in over 20 decades, Lex founded the now legendary Mitchell’s Brewery.
After 19 successful years, Lex sold the Knysna brewery and took a sabbatical from his craft, however in 2011 he could no longer deny his yearning to brew once more. Having forged a new partnership, he established a microbrewery and gastro pub on the banks of the Baakens River, Port Elizabeth. It is here at Bridge Street Brewery that his passion for brewing all-natural craft beer was rekindled and where he now once again applies his trade as he imparts his knowledge of fusion mashing with others.
